The Smithsonian is the largest museum complex in the world, with 19 museums, 9 research centers and a zoo. The will of British scientist James Smithson bequeathed his entire estate to a nephew, with the stipulation that, if the nephew died without heirs, the estate should then be used to found an institution in his name in D.C. And the rest is history. Extraordinarily, Smithson had never even been to the U.S., and to this day, the motives behind Smithson's bequest are a mystery. The most famous Smithsonian museums - such as the Air and Space Museum, Museum of Natural History, Hirshhorn Museum, and the National Museum of American History - can be accessed on the National Mall, but all of them are worth exploring.
