The main artery between Oakland and San Francisco
Though she may not be as pretty or as well-known as her sister, the Golden Gate Bridge, at 8.4 miles long, the Bay Bridge is one of the longest bridges in the world. Originally built in 1933-1936, the Bay Bridge sees about 280,000 cars daily, over twice the usage of NYC's Brooklyn Bridge. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the Bay Bridge became notorious for the 50 meter section of its upper deck that collapsed onto the lower deck, causing one fatality - since then, it has undergone extensive seismic retrofitting as well as a full replacement of its eastern span.
