The strength of the Museum Of Modern Art is abstract expressionism and photography. One of the main issues the museum always had was the lack of space and size of rooms so that only selected pieces of the entire collection could be shown at a time and had to be changed in rotating exhibitions.
Sometimes you would see artwork by Francesco Clemente and 125 of his contemporaries and some other times 188 photos of Liselotte Models’ American and European pre-war works – than again Chicago Art from 1965 to 1985.
In the meantime the space situation improved tremendously. The museum moved into a new 60 million dollar building - designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta - which due to its architectural shapes and elaborate lighting has become a true cathedral of modern art.
The San Francisco MoMa collection contains works of the best West Coast artists like Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock, a significant number of paintings by French Henri Matisse, some paintings by Miró and Pablo Picasso as well as an interesting selection of art pieces by German artists Max Ernst, George Grosz, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Kurt Schwitters.
The departments for architecture and design of the MoMa are setting the benchmarks on a worldwide level!
