Mount Uluru, or Ayers Rock, is located about 280 miles southwest of Alice Springs. The 1044-foot-high rock formation, which sits miles deep in the ground, has become a symbol of Australia like no other miracle of nature. The rock is of significant spiritual meaning for the Anangu Aborigines and an important witness of their history of creation. The Aborigines ask all visitors not to climb their holy mountain. The Kata-Tjuta cluster, located about 30 miles from Uluru, is a large congeries of 36 rounded hills. The highest of these “heads” (Kata Tjuta = "many heads") is 600 feet higher than the Uluru. The mountains are perfect for beautiful walks to enjoy the rich oranges and reds of the Central Australian desert. The walk through the Valley of the Winds takes about 3 hours and is highly recommended.

It was an amazing sight to see the sun rise above Uluru and watch its colors change with every minute the sun rose higher! Definitely worth getting up in the middle of the night! ;-)
