Insight into Aboriginal art
Inside its grand façade, Australia’s largest gallery houses the permanent works of many of the country’s most revered contemporary artists as well as a collection of more familiar international names like Monet and Picasso. The Yiribana Gallery, in stark contrast, showcases a fine collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander works and is a major highlight. The Asian Gallery is also well worth a look. The main gallery features a dynamic programme of major visiting exhibitions, and there is a great bookshop and café. Be sure not to miss the quirky and monumental matchsticks installation by the late Brett Whiteley, one of the city’s most celebrated artists, behind the main building. More of his work can be seen at the Brett Whiteley Museum in Surry Hills.
