The Pinnacles

The Pinnacles

by Marco Polo

Bizarre towering rock needles in a lonely sandy desert

Due to the lightning conditions, it’s best to visit the spectacular collection of up to 15-foot-high chalkstone pillars in the early morning. One starts to wonder if the biblical story of Lot’s wife who turned to stone could have happened here. At least some of the pillars evoke people turned to stone. When driving along the 3-mile-long loop road through the pillar forest or posing for a photo between the pins, it’s easy to imagine this story. The formation of the pillars took place 80,000 to 150,000 years ago.
