The 165-mile-long reef, a marine reserve since 1987, stretches from the small coastal village Coral Bay along the peninsula in a northward direction. When it comes to beauty and versatility, the reef bears comparison to the Eastern Australian Barrier Reef itself. It’s home to at least 220 species of coral and fish. Four sea turtle species as well as manta rays, humpback whales, sea cows, and various shark species live on the reef. Ningaloo Reef is known as one of the few places where whale sharks can be observed at close range.
