Feasting in the "belly" of Santiago
Four blocks north of the Plaza de Armas is the interesting Mercado Central. This is the best place to come for seafood in Santiago, and is so prominent in the Chilean psyche that it was the setting for a recent national soap opera, Amores del Mercado. The building faces the Parque Venezuela, with the Cal y Canto metro station and, at its western end, the former Mapocho railway station (www.estacion mapocho.cl) which is now one of the city’s most important cultural centres and concert venues.
