With poets, sun worshippers and distillers of spirits
Valle del Elqui perfectly illustrates how people have tried for thousands of years to sustain in the desert. The grave of Gabriela Mistral (1889 until 1957), the poetess crowned with the Nobel Prize who has poured her native country into the poetry, can be found in Montegrande. Valle del Elqui owes its glory not to poetry but sturdy pleasures: The grapes cultivated here are distilled to Pisco, the national schnapps of Chile. The mysterious Valle de Cochiguaz, a valley with many mystics, sun worshippers and UFO believers, lies next to Monegrande.

Just today I was in the Valle del Elqui, it is certainly one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. To experience the incredible mix of semi-desert to the mountains and green grape plantations, I participated in a tour operator called Turismo Migrantes in Pisco Elqui (http://www.turismomigrantes.cl/) for a bicycle tour. It was fantastic to drive through the valley, among vineyards and over again to discover a quiet village with a church. I particularly liked was that we could choose our pace and we are on the road at a distillery stopped and looked at how Pisco is produced and then of course this also tried what! Who is not a fan of cycling: it will be offered walking tours or excursions on horseback. This day in the Valle del Elqui was a wonderful experience that no one should miss out on his trip to Chile!
