Wawel refers to the limestone hilltop upon which Wawel Cathedral and the Royal Castle can be found, a sprawling complex located on the banks of the Vistula River. As the former seat of the national government, Wawel has seen over five centuries of royalty coronated and interred, and today remains one of the most important historical sites in Poland. The Wawel Dragon, a legendary beast in Polish folklore, is also rumored to have his cave underneath the castle, and it's a popular stop on the tourist route through Krakow.
