Czestochowa is the place of Mary, the mother of God and the mother of Poland. Many Poles are convinced that without Mary, the Pauline monks could not have defended the church against Swedish heretics in 1655; hundreds of thousands of believers make a pilgrimage every year August 1st to 15th to see the icon of the Black Madonna.
