Mazatlán is home to the largest Mexican import-export harbour and fishing port on the Pacific and has one of the largest shrimp fleets in the world. Geographically, the port city of Mazatlán is located near the Tropic of Cancer in a natural bay.
Indians lived in Mazatlán long before the Spanish conquest. The Spaniards under Hernando de Bazán came in 1576, but the city was not established until 1806. Before that, the region around Mazatlán had been a target for pirates and a hide-out for buccaneers. In the middle of the 19th century, German settlers enlarged the harbour and thus laid the cornerstone for a more prosperous Mazatlán. At this time, the larger harbour was meant to facilitate the export of agricultural products and the import of farm equipment.
