Cuetzalán (1,200m/3940ft) is magnificent!
Situated amid the mountains of the Sierra Norte in the federal state of Puebla, Cuetzalán is very picturesque. Various Indian tribes live in and around town, and particularly on holidays and market days the Indians visit the town wearing their most beautiful costumes, their presence adding to the surrounding beauty. At some of the annual celebrations, select regional folklore groups (Quetzales, Negritos, Santiagos and Voladores) perform their characteristic dances. Cuetzalán offers the chance to do some sightseeing. There is the town hall with its European-style architecture, the parish church with the unusual Torre de los Jarritos (the bell tower in the cemetery is decorated with 80 clay vessels) and, a little way outside the village, Guadalupe church in front of which are elaborately decorated grave sites. The most important source of income in and around Cuetzalán is the cultivation and processing of coffee.
