When Cortés first arrived at what is now called Cholula
(12km/7.5mi north-east of Puebla) he found a Mesoamerican religious centre with 100,000 inhabitants and 400 shrines erected around the Great Pyramid of Quetzalcóatl.
All that remains of that glorious past today is a giant mound, underneath which the world’s largest pyramid by area is hidden. On top of the pyramid now stands a church, and from there the view is of the spires of churches built by the Spaniards on top of pyramids and temples after the conquest.
