The cathedral was built between 1558 and 1616 and was then subject to many reconstructions. The structure is Baroque in nature with a strange mixture of different styles added to it. Some of the paintings in the chapel and side chapel (sagrario) are said to be by Cristóbal de Villalpando, Miguel Cabrera and Murillo. Over the vestry portal hangs a painting ascribed to Murillo The Assumption. The cathedral stands amid plazas on all four sides; the Plaza de los Laureles in front of the main portal features a large fountain.
