Guadalajara

Guadalajara

by Marco Polo

Guadalajara is second in size only to Mexico City

Many foreigners regard it as the most Mexican of Mexican cities because much of what foreigners see as typical Mexican folklore had its origins here. Among such traditions, which for some express the essence of Mexico, are Mariachi music, tequila, the sombrero, charreadas (Mexican rodeos) and the popular folk dance Jarabe Tapatío.
Guadalajara is situated on a gentle hill in the fertile highland valley of Atemajac. The climate here is subtropical and temperate. For many years, Guadalajara, capital of the federal state of Jalisco, has been isolated from Mexico City. The city has therefore maintained its character as a place with a European flavour which is steeped in tradition. The people here call themselves Tapatíos. Thanks to their affluence and love of the arts, they have been able to create an endearing city with broad avenues, well-kept parks and light, clean buildings. However, recent strong efforts to modernize, along with rapid population growth, have diminished the traditional small-town character of Guadalajara. An excursion to the suburbs Tlaquepaque and Tonalá, both well-known for their arts and crafts, and a side trip to Mexico’s largest lake, the Lago de Chapala, are well worthwhile.
