It is nestled in the foothills of two mountain ranges. The narrow streets ascend at very steep angles, lined with small villas, small one-storey houses and countless platerias (silversmith shops). Above the houses at a small town square (Zocaló) rises the majestic, lavishly decorated cathedral San Sebastián y Santa Prisca. José Borda from the French Basque region donated the monumental church to the community in the mid-18th century. He had become very rich almost overnight after a gigantic silver vein had been discovered near Taxco in the el Atache Mountains. Taxco, a protected historic site, is the image of a self-contained colonial town. It is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Mexico: when darkness falls and the lights from the many houses sparkle in the night the city shines like a jewel. Before moving south on the MEX 95 or, alternatively, on the parallel country road, the city of Iguala is worth a visit. Here, as in Taxco, visitors marvel at the art of the silversmiths and goldsmiths. In the last week of February, a grand flag festival entertains Iguala citizens and visitors with parades, cockfights and great arts and crafts fairs.
