The city consists mostly of brightly painted one-storey buildings; it made a name for itself as the centre of the Zapatist movement. The majority of the indigenous Indian population of Mexico lives in the region around San Cristóbal; San Cristóbal de las Casas 125 Maya communities and ten different tribal languages are officially registered in the mountain regions of Chiapas. In the colonial centre of San Cristóbal and especially at the traditional arts and crafts market in front of the Santo Domingo church, the native Tzotzil dominate the street scene in their colourful garb. Most Indian villages are hidden in deep gorges or cling to the edge of a mountain ledge at the end of a path somewhere. Of those villages in the very nearly 3,000m/10,000ft high, intensely wooded mountains, a place called Chamula is the easiest to reach. In particular, the market in front of the white church with its turquoise-blue ornaments works its magic on all visitors.
