San Juan Chamula is the ceremonial centre of the Chamula with the largest of the Tzotzil speaking Indian groups

Most of the approximately 40,000 Chamula live in scattered small villages. The site lies about 11km/7mi north-west of San Cristóbal. Here, as in many Indian villages or on hill tops, stand three large crosses , which symbolize the tree of life.
