There are no indications of an ancient Indian history. In 1598, the Spaniards established a village in the area under the name of Villa Felipe II. Later, the name was changed to Villahermosa (beautiful village). Over time, this village has developed into the largest city in the federal state of Tabasco, due in no small part to the rich crude oil reserves discovered in Tabasco and Chiapas. New traffic connections have also boosted the city’s growth.
