One of the most beautiful landmarks of the city is the "Maiden's Tower." It was built in the 18th century on a tiny island near the Asian side at the entry of the Bosporus. During the day the tower is a café, in the evening it is a cosmopolitan restaurant with live music. According to legend, the delicate tower was built to protect a sultan's daughter from the snake bites predicted by a fortune-teller -- to no avail. According to another legend, Leander swam through the Hellespont to his beloved Hero every evening, until his untimely demise.
