Ephesos (Efes)

Ruins of one of the most beautiful ancient towns

Visiting the ruins of the ancient Greek city Ephesus (44 miles from İzmir) is one of the highlights on a trip to Turkey. In the ancient world, the former financial and commercial center with a quarter million residents was still located by the sea. Because of aggradations, it’s now located about 6 miles inland -- near the small town Selçuk. The ruins of the monumental Temple of Artemis from the 3rd century BC are magnificent; the temple was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Theaters, gymnasiums, baths, the agora, and the outstandingly reconstructed Library of Celsus are gorgeous as well. Paul the Apostle and John the Evangelist are said to have stayed in Ephesus for several years.
