Golden Lane (Zlatá ulička)
Battlements linked the White Tower to Daliborka Tower. The surviving north frontage consists of picturesque cottages, which are built into the battlement arches. Rudolf II assigned them to his 24 castle guards, who practised a skilled craft in their spare time. The name Alchemists’ Lane refers to Rudolf II’s alchemists, who are traditionally said to have lived here and tried to produce gold; however, there is evidence that their laboratories were in Mihulka Tower (Alchemists’ room). Later on, craftsmen and poor people lived in the cottages. It was in number 22 that Franz Kafka (Famous People ) worked on his stories and essays in 1916/1917; among works written here are „A Country Doctor“, „Up in the Galler“y, „A Report for the Academ“y and „A Message for the Emperor“. Today, little souvenir shops and brightly coloured houses line Golden Lane.
