Malá strana

Antechamber of the Prague Castle

Malá Strana is a district of the city of Prague and one of its most historic regions. The name, which translates to 'Little Side' derives from its position on the left (west) bank of the river Vltava, on the slopes just below the Prague Castle, in opposition to the larger towns of Prague on the right bank, to which it is conjoined by the Charles Bridge. The baroque era Wallenstein Palace is one of the most visited attractions here. It is an extensive palace complex with five courtyards and the garden, which is set as a French Park. The St. Nicholas Church and the famous statue of the Holy Infant Jesus of Prague is located in the Church of Our Lady Victorious, both in Malá Strana. Nerudova street, in this neighborhood, is named after the famous Czech writer Jan Neruda. Also, the Petrin lookout tower is located here. The place has a fantastically convivial ambience, especially at night.

Only after these events, when they arrived Italian artists and architects, the neighborhood began to take on the baroque and renaissance that still retains. Since then Malá Strana has lived in a kind of stillness that made him such an angle outside of time. There are no cars, the tourists rarely come in hidden corners and at night the neighborhood takes on a magical, almost unreal. Lesser Town Square (Namesti Malostranske) Coming from the Charles Bridge, Lesser Town Square you get to the center of the neighborhood. The slight slope of the square begins to climb that leads to Nerudova Street, then to Prague Castle. The square is beautifully surrounded by a succession of Renaissance and Baroque palaces perfectly preserved and developed around the church of San Nicola, which divides it into two separate units. At the center of the square is the Column of the Virgin, built in 1715 called for the Plague
