Antirrio (Greek: Modern, Αντίρριο, pronounced anˈdirio, Ancient/Katharevousa: -n), other spellings Antirrio, Antirrion, Antirhion, Antirion, ancient spelling: Antirrhion, Latin: Antirrhium is a community lying in a cape which has its closest distance to the Peloponnese in which the Rio-Antirio bridge can now access to the Peloponnese since August 2004 in the prefecture of Aitoloacarnania and is also a municipality. It is not the southernmost point in the prefecture. The name is a combination of Anti- and Rio. It is now bypassed to the northeast with GR-5/E55 with a junction 2 km north with GR-48/E65 (Amfissa - Antirio). Distance from the Peloponnese is 2.4 km from mainland Greece and Rio is WNW, other distances from the Peloponnese are Patras about 10 km ENE, about 209 km W of Athens and NW of Aigio, WSW of Amfissa, SW of Nafpaktos, E of Messolonghi and SE of Agrinio. The cape forms the Strait of Rio-Antirio, Strait of Rhium in ancient times, which separates the Gulf of Patras in the west and the Gulf of Corinth in the east. (...) more....
