Founded by Catherine the Great in 1764, the Hermitage is one of the world's oldest and most opulent art museums. Housing the world's largest collection of paintings, of which only a small percentage are ever on display, the Hermitage is appropriately gargantuan - though the museum encompasses 6 buildings, you'll probably only find yourself in the Winter Palace, and that in itself can take days to get through. If you are going in the high season, lines can be long - avoid this by buying tickets on the Hermitage's website.
