Last resting-place for the celebrities in town
If you walk through the entrance to the area of the Alexander-Newskij Monastery, the Parade Gate, you’ll see the famous monastery cemeteries on two sides. The Lazarus Cemetery, “Necropolis of the 18th century”, lies to the left. It was the resting place for statesmen, artists and scientists at times of Peter the Great. On the right side, you’ll see the Tichwiner Cemetery, “Necropolis of the masters of art”, which is larger. Dostojewskij, who did not want to be with his contemporary poets at the Wolkowo Cemetery, is buried here.
