Arbat Street: first pedestrian area of town
During the 19th century, Arbat was the quarter of the nobility, officers and trades people who built their villas and town halls here after the fire in 1812. Centre of Arbat is Arbat Street, the first pedestrian area of Moscow. It is a good example of the change the town has gone though within the last few years. One café opens after another and you can sit outside and watch the live hustle and bustle of the souvenir dealers, musicians and portrait artists in the summer. The street is lined by beautiful, old buildings.
