As recently as 1947, Mysore was the capital of the Mysore Kingdom and the seat of the Wodeyar ruling family; the Maharaja's palace is still the biggest attraction in town, and at times, the shady avenues seem to ache for their former glory. But Mysore is growing into its own - sandalwood, silk and essential oils are all lucrative business, and the sprawling market is a great place to stock up on these and other valuables. Mysore has also become a destination for Ashtanga yoga practioners; the Mysore style is growing in international popularity, and more and more yoga centers are popping up. Though there's not much to keep you here beyond a few days, Mysore is an delightful place to stop before continuing on to other destinations in Karnataka.
