Lucknow

by annette tripwolf

The once ruling Nawabs of Lucknow have left a legacy of a delectable, fragrant cuisine. Today, a selection of downtown eateries and upscale restaurants stand testament to fare of the Nawabs.

Lucknow is an eclectic blend of old world charm and modern appeal. As the capital of Uttar Pradesh, the city is awash with Mayawati's (Chief Minister of the state) monumental statues, still under construction. If lucky, you may catch a sneaky preview of the dalit leader's statue of herself clutching a Versace hand-bag.

The residents may see it as bad taste and lament the razed trees and buildings but Lucknow still upholds an old-world magnetism.

With full bellies, there is much to explore in this city: The Hogwarts-esque “La Martiniere”, vibrant Chikan embroidered fabrics, a crocodile reserve, the labyrinths of Bara Imambara and The Residency that was the stage for one of the most dramatic sieges of the Indian Uprising.

The people of Lucknow are warm and polite and while this is off the tourist trail, a few days here are a few days well spent.
