South of the town center, numerous top officials of the Communist Party owned villas; it was Todor Zhivkov who built the residence that is still used as the representational seat of the president. Boyana's prestige was enhanced by a church that bears its name and has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It dates back to the 11th century; an extension with magnificent wall paintings was added in 1259.
