A true treasury of art
The rocks above the Rusenski Lom river contain some of a few preserved monuments of medieval Bulgarian art: Wall paintings from the Tarnovo School in the cave abbey are under UNESCO protection. A monastic group settled here in the 12th century and started to build an abbey complex in the rock canyons. The most famous section, a cave called “the church”, was probably built between 1331 and 1371.
