National Museum

The National Museum in Bangkok offers varied insights into the culture and history of Thailand

At least half the day should be set aside for visiting it. It houses a vast collection, partly because it remained the one and only museum in all Thailand until the mid-1970s. Since then the Department of Fine Arts, the authority responsible for art in Thailand, has established various branches all over the country so that archaeological finds and examples of art can be exhibited as close as possible to their place of discovery.
Guided tours of the National Museum in English are on offer every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (starting from the main entrance at 9.30am and lasting one and a half hours). An excellent catalogue of exhibits is available from the main counter, and almost all the items on display have descriptive panels printed in English
