Kanchanaburi province has long been regarded as the perfect place for a holiday, thanks to its charming countryside and proximity to Bangkok. Excavations have shown that the province was already settled in prehistoric times and that even then the rivers that flow out of the mountains to the west were an important part of the trade route from the Indian hinterland to what is now Cambodia.
