Ban Chiang

Ban Chiang

by Marco Polo

The archaeological finds that sparked the rush were the remains of the most important prehistoric settlements yet found in Asia.

The small town of Ban Chiang was known to few people until 1967, when a unique discovery instigated an influx of archaeologists from all over the world to this village of just a few hundred inhabitants.
History of the ancient settlementThe excavations showed that the region was populated at least 3,800 years before the birth of Christ, when Europe was still at the end of its own Neolithic period. Before these finds came to light, it was believed that the site had first been settled by Lao migrants just 170 years earlier.
