mostly uninhabited islands in the proximity were declared a nature reserve in 1982 under the name Ko Chang Marine National Park. The island of 3,500 inhabitants is about 29km/18mi long, 8–14 km/5–7mi wide and has retained some of its original charm thanks to its national park status. For many years the accommodation in the region was rather spartan, but since than a large number of bungalow developments and small hotels have been built, some of which are very comfortable. Since the Trat province has attracted the presence of several international companies, Ko Chang has become a very popular place for weekend trips by employees. The natural beauty of some of the landscape is practically unspoiled, with thickly wooded hills that rise to 744m/2440ft above sea level. The interior of the island is dominated by dense rainforest, where monkeys, snakes and some wild boar roam. Nam Tok Tham Mayom is the largest waterfall on the east coast. Not far away is the Nam Tok King Rama waterfall. There are a number of walks by which the interior can be explored, although they are not particularly well signposted.
