A number of quiet hotels and holiday villages along the coast are particularly well suited for a family holiday. The growth of Hua Hin is closely linked to the completion of the railway to southern Thailand in 1910. Before that time Hua Hin was an unimportant little town, until it was discovered by the Bangkok elite, especially Prince Nares, son of King Chulalongkorn, who was the first of the royal family to establish a summer residence here (Saen Samran House). Subsequent princes and princesses added more bungalows and parks. While the residence of King Rama VII is open for tours of the rooms and parkland, the residence currently used by King Bhumibol at the western end of the town is off limits.
