The island of Ko Pha Ngan with its jungle landscape is dominated by a limestone mountain ridge that comes right down to the beaches in places. The inhabitants mainly live from fishing, although tourism is increasingly becoming an extra source of income. The island is 19km/12mi long and 12km/7mi wide and lies about 16km/10mi north of Ko Samui, for which it has long served as an overflow resort when Ko Samui is full up.
Thong Sala is the only real settlement on Ko Pha Ngan. There used to be just a few fishing families here, but nowadays the village is the centre of island life and has all the necessary facilities for tourists. The jetty for boats from Ko Samui is also in Thong Sala.
