The harbour of Krabi lies opposite the island of Phuket on a strip of land at the mouth of the river of the same name. In the background bizarrely shaped limestone mountains rise out of the luxuriant vegetation. Inland the scene is marked by seemingly endless rubber plantations, only occasionally broken by patches of jungle.
After the first backpackers discovered Krabi in the mid-1980s, the town’s reputation as a paradise practically unspoiled by tourism lasted for some years. However, this ended in 1999 with the opening of an airport served by regular flights of Thai International Airways. Several highly luxurious hotel developments were already in existence for guests who appreciated the glorious white sandy beaches. The beaches have lost the air of solitude that they once had. The beaches at Ao Nang and Rai Leh are particularly busy during the months November to April.
