Koh Tao

Koh Tao

by Marco Polo

One of the Gulf of Thailand’s little jewels

The small island of Ko Tao has not been discovered by tourists until the 1980s. The best time to visit Ko Tao is between December and April or from August to September.
Ko Tao is only 8km/5mi long and no more than 3km/2mi wide. It is also a considerable distance (38km/24mi) from the mainland. The island nevertheless gets very crowded, especially during the Thai summer holidays (end of April to the middle of May) when many take their vacations here. Ko Tao was an island prison until about 50 years ago. Cynics claim that the Thai authorities only moved the inmates, mainly political prisoners, elsewhere because the island was too beautiful for them to feel properly incarcerated.
