Ko Samui

by Marco Polo

Ko Samui is part of the Ang Thong Archipelago

Until the 1980s the islands were seen as a refuge for backpackers and a little-known, secret haven of delightful, near-empty beaches. The charms of Thailand’s third-biggest island did not escape the attentions of the travel companies for long, however, and when Bangkok Airways built a private airport in the late 1980s nothing stood in the way of continuous development of the tourist infrastructure.
Since Ko Samui has managed to retain a good deal of its charm in spite of the rapid development, the islands are still among the most popular places in Thailand for a beach holiday. Even though the cheap and cheerful accommodation of the past is on the decline, it is still possible to get a room for as little as 200 baht or not much more. For those who prefer more comfort, there are a great many hotels ranging right up to the most luxurious category. The explosion in visitor numbers has undoubtedly benefited the economy of the island, if little else. As far as the downside of development is concerned, the natural environment has taken the brunt of it. An overall planning strategy for hotels bungalows and other tourist facilities has been put in place only recently – too late to rectify the sins of the past.
