Longhua Temple

by Marco Polo

A spiritual refuge amid the city’s tumult

Longhua Temple is the largest and certainly the prettiest such institution in Shanghai. An attractive pagoda built in 977 stands at the main gate. The temple, reputedly founded in the 3rd century AD, was rebuilt in the 15th and 19th centuries and renovated in 2003. During the Cultural Revolution it was closed. None of the original statues survived the destructive rage of the Red Guards. Even so, the splendid “Temple of the Dragon Flower” has preserved its serene charm. Today it once again houses over 80 monks, whose repetitive chanting, accompanied by wooden fish drumbeats, fills the air.
