There are marvelous beaches on the Coromandel peninsula. Cook's Beach in Mercury Bay and Hahei with Mares Leg Beach are beautiful. In Hahei, a footpath leads past Pohutukawa trees to Cathedral Cove, a hidden beach with a portal like rock gateway. Hot Water Beach is not far from Hahei and highly recommended. At low tide, you can have your own, well tempered pool in the sand, the deeper the hotter. The tide makes the pools cooler.
