Across the channel, west of Playa Los Cocos, is Cayo Sabinal, reached by road from Nuevitas. Boat trips will be organized by hotel tour desks in Santa Lucía. Hemingway was inspired to write that it was a marvellous place where the wind from the east blows night and day, and the territory as virgin as when Columbus arrived on these shores. Things haven’t changed much since then. There are beautiful beaches of white sand which are practically deserted and the cay is a wildlife reserve housing the largest colony of pink flamingos in the Caribbean, plus many other birds that are rare or endangered elsewhere. There is pleasant accommodation available in cabins, but lots of mosquitoes. There are seafood restaurants along the beaches of Playa Brava (the better beach) and Playa Los Pinos.
