The oldest house in Cuba which has been turned into a museum
With its wood-grilled windows and balcony, this is a jewel of colonial architecture. The house was built in 1516-22 for the first governor of Cuba. The ground floor still contains a furnace for melting gold into bars. On the second floor, behind the grillwork, are the private rooms. This house, and that next door now serve as the Museo de Ambiente Histórico Cubano, with furnishings from the 16th to 19th centuries.
