Once the most fashionable residential area of the capital the residents left San Telmo at the end of the 19th century during the outbreak of a yellow fever epidemic head over heels. The gigantic manor houses in San Telmo were turned into tenements for immigrants, many small shops and back room pubs came into existence during this time. Many antique stores and tango cafes can be found at Plaza Dorrego, where a popular flea market takes place every Sunday.
