Mumbai (Bombay)
Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is the largest city in India and its commercial and entertainment capital. Diverse to the extreme, celebrities of all kinds live lavish lifestyles here right alongside the impoverished people in the streets. The twelve different languages spoken and the many other religious, ethnic, and economic differences all make Mumbai a cultural melting pot on the Arabian Sea. Chhatrapati Shivaji is the largest international airport in India, bringing in not only capital but also cultural influences from abroad. Mumbai is the birthplace of Indian cinema and home to Bollywood, so celebrities spend much of their time and money here. Due to these great monetary influences, it can be a lot more expensive to stay here than in some other Indian cities. Watch your wallet, because you’ll still find meals for 20 rupees (the equivalent of about 50 cents) on the street (the whole range of Indian cuisine in front of you!), but for sushi, you will most likely have to pay western prices. Hotel owners in Mumbai tend to be tough negotiators too. But this city will teach you how to bargain! Mumbai is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus and the Elephanta Caves. Most travelers plan a relaxing excursion to the southern state of Goa - a perfect way to temporarily escape this turbulent city

2008-07-01Wow. This is one of those places you must visit once (but only once). Its seething with the vibrant essence of life... in all its glory and shame. If you are up for adventure, don't mind relentless traffic hassles and odd-uneven service - then this is your town. If you like things run efficiently and cleanly (a la Berlin & Tokyo), then STAY AWAY. Or at least pack an extra suitcase of patience and chill-pills.
