São João da Madeira (pron. sɐ̃ũ ʒu'ɐ̃ũ dɐ mɐ'dɐiɾɐ) is a municipality in northwestern Portugal. It has a land area of 7.93 km² and a total population of 21,407 inhabitants, and 18,259 electors (2006). It has the smallest land area of any municipality in Portugal.
The municipality is composed of only one parish (freguesia), and is located in the northern part of the District of Aveiro, between the municipalities of Santa Maria da Feira and Oliveira de Azeméis. It is inserted in the Oporto Metropolitan Area. The present Mayor is Manuel Castro Almeida, elected by the Social Democratic Party.
