While modern Fredrikstad runs along the west bank of the Glomma, the east side is Scandinavia's best-preserved fortified town. Founded in 1567 by Fredrik II, it was the country's most secure fortress in 1660 and its military use was only discontinued in 1903. 60 cannons are still preserved there.
