The historic city centre is in a picturesque location between mighty branches of the river. The city's port earned it great wealth, evidence of which is provided by the old merchants' houses on Wijnstraat. Another very attractive feature is the shopping street Voorstraat, which winds its way along the banks of a canal through the centre.
